We had a very enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Saturday, we attended the Vandalia Gathering at our state capitol complex. I love listening to all the music that surrounds you everywhere. And of course there are the arts and crafts. Oh to have the talent some of those people have. I bought some lovely photographs and a very interesting necklace. The necklace is an old pocket watch that has been disassembled. Then a picture, small watch face and gears and some words have been inserted. It is adorable. Now I am going to start haunting Goodwill for old watches.
The smell of wonderful food surrounds you also. There are so many choices. I opted for some hummus with a fresh pita, a roasted in the husk ear of corn and then we had a funnel cake. We brought a cooler with our drinks for the day. We found a shady spot midst the music and vendors, and set up our camp for the day. We have done this for several years now, and no one bothers anything while we are away.
One of my favorite things is the Three Rivers Avian Center. They rescue birds and raptors. This year they brought a 3 year old Bald Eagle named Regis. His wing was broken and did not heal properly. It is so wonderful that someplace like this can save these majestic birds and educate the public about them. Twister - the barn owl and Perry the falcon were there also. They are so small compared to Regis.
Inside the Cultural Center, there is Appalachian Heritage dancing. This includes Irish, Scottish and European dances complete with costumes. On an outdoor stage there is Flatfoot and Old Time Square dancing. There was also a Liar's Contest, storytelling, and hands on activities for the kids.
When I am not walking about, I sit and "dog and people watch'. I met a handsome French Bulldog named Monty. I offered him some water and our "neighbors" quickly produced an empty ice cream bowl for him to drink it out of. Children were climbing a tree nearby. There was a family with 6 children, there were people in costume, and people who looked like they were in costume. There were dreadlocks and cleavage and short skirts. There were old men with wrinkled and ratty old clothes who carried pristine cases containing beautifully kept instruments.
I look forward to this every year. I am so thankful that the weather was so perfect.
Sunday, the girls came out. They are all so sweet. Liberty and I layed down and took a little nap together. Our first nap together...
Monday, our electric went out. We decided that was the perfect time to head to the cemetary to put flowers on Sarah's grave. Then we stopped and pretended to buy some new cushions for the swing and a new grill. Then we came home and I began learning how to operate the riding mower. I was terrified that I was going to tip over on the turns. So I need to write down all the steps for putting it in reverse. Woody finished mowing. The yard really looked nice when he was done. It is wonderful having a husband that wants to spend time with me and that I love to spend time with. Life is good!
